Anton Stadler, born 1753 and died 1812, is well known because he inspired Wolfgang Mozart to write his well known compositions with his playing. Mozart’s pieces wouldn’t be well appreciated without a excellent musician to play them. At that time the clarinet was no where near as developed as it is today, it was a “crude, very imperfect instrument” ( ). Anton gambled and drank, spent money he didn't have, and died poor, owing Mozart money.
Heinrich Baermann, born 1784 and died 1847, began his career as an oboe player in Potsdam. He learned to play the clarinet and traveled all over Europe on concert tours and met Carl Maria von Weber in Munich. Weber wrote concertos for Baermann like Mozart wrote pieces for Stadler. They achieved enormoussuccess together. “Weber wrote to a friend: “The whole orchestra went crazy and demands concertos from me. They are even writing to the king and board of musical directors…” (
